As It Screams Just Please Love Me

22 November 2007—13 January 2008
As It Screams Just Please Love Me is a heartfelt declaration of independence, it is a statement yelled by the individual to define singularity through a mutual relation with the other. All the works chosen for this exhibition explore different possible scenarios which affirm a positioning as autonomous subject, whilst reacting to one’s categorisation into general systems of values.
The artist screams at a mountain, performs youth clichés or engages either physically or psychologically with one’s limits against nature’s backdrop. Be it with shared rites of passage or lonely self-definitions, the show plays with the tricky notion of a romantic mood as an enactment of the human ‘comedy of life’. The different treatment of time and space in each work shifts from suspension to presence, back to distance, in a forever frustrated effort to grasp something which is fleeting and undefined. While the actor moves just to stand still, nature acts as a resonance for the inner subjective conflicts and its beauty makes everything excruciatingly painful.
As It Screams Just Please Love Me comprises a main video projection that will change for any of the four weeks of the exhibition and that will be screened in sequence on the fifth and last week. At the same time at FormContent there will be a fixed part of the show comprising Michael Fliri’s video Let Love be Eternal While It Lasts, (2006) on a monitor, the sculptural piece We May Never Pass this Way Again, (2006) by Jacopo Miliani and another monitor placed on the ground with Nico Vascellari’sUntitled Song, (2004). This idea springs from the desire to experiment with the meaning and the possibilities of a video show, concentrating more on the filmic attitude of the works rather than exclusively on their medium.
Week 1: Santiago Mostyn, Mississippi Outtakes (2006)
A boat, an enchanting misty river and a bunch of friends: a lost time in a Heart of Darkness meets Eden summer in the US Midwest.
Week 2: Richard T. Walker, A Nice View (2007)
An investigation into the definition of the self through the eye of the other. Walker uses natural elements – in this specific case a surreal monologue of a mountain – to objectify his thoughts on self-perception.
Week 3: Deborah Ligorio, Donut to Spiral, (2004)
The route towards Smithson’ Spiral Jetty, a road trip and a travel of self-discovery, following the hypnotic voiceover of the artist
Week 4: Sven Augustijnen, Le Guide du Parc, (2006) is a fictional documentary taking place at the Parc Royal in Brussels . Overflows of words hide and reveal simultaneously what is hidden in plain sight.
